TS-1 Thermal Gin Saw Monitor

Watches gin saw temperature so you can act before the first spark

The Gen 3 TS-1 puts thermal cameras on the saw cylinders and reports temperature to the gin's controls continuously. It works upstream of spark detection: the point is to catch a stand heating up while it is still a maintenance call, not to catch what has already ignited.

Installed

TS-1 on the floor

Photographs from working gins, not renderings.

  • A row of TS-1 thermal cameras on articulated arms mounted inside a gin stand, with lint caught on the frame around them
  • A white Gen 3 Dynamics enclosure bolted to the frame beside a gin stand, conduit running from its base into the machine
  • A sealed Gen 3 Dynamics panel-mount touchscreen bolted to a structural column in a gin

Capabilities

What TS-1 does

  • Upstream of spark detection, not instead of it

A spark detection system reacts to something already burning. TS-1 watches the heat that comes first. Run both. TS-1 is not a substitute for spark detection and is not sold as one.

  • Every stand watched, all the time

Each monitored stand has its own temperature reported continuously. Heat is caught because the system is always looking, not because somebody happened to be walking the aisle.

  • Warning and alarm the gin defines

Two setpoints, both yours: a warning while a stand is climbing, and an alarm at the temperature you have decided is not acceptable.

  • An air knife on the lenses

A built-in air knife keeps the cameras clear of lint and debris, so the system goes on seeing what it is watching through a full season.

Why it matters

Before the first spark

A gin stand pushes seed cotton through a bank of saws at speed, and nearly everything that goes wrong in one turns into heat first. A bearing starts to fail. A saw runs against a rib. The cylinder packs and the friction has nowhere else to go.

Heat is the early part of that sequence. A spark is the late part, and by the time there is smoke for a person to notice, the fire has already started and it is not going to stay in the gin stand.

Spark detection and suppression catch the late part, and every gin should have them. TS-1 is for the part before. It does not replace spark detection, and we would not tell anyone to run without it. What it does is give you the earlier of the two chances.

How it works

Thermal cameras view the saw cylinder of each monitored stand. TS-1 reads them continuously and tracks the hottest temperature each camera can see.

Two setpoints, both set by the gin, decide what it does:

  • Warning while a stand is climbing and someone should go look at it.
  • Alarm at the temperature the gin has decided is not acceptable.

Both stages leave the system as standard discrete signals, wired like any other field device, which puts the response where it belongs: with the controls already running the gin. Slow down, shut a stand, call somebody. The job here is to be right about the temperature and early about saying so.

Seeing it

Live thermal views are served over the gin's network, so they are available in any browser with access. A screen at the stand is one place to put them, not the only one.

They earn their keep on a callout. A technician walking out already knows which stand triggered, how hot it got, and where the heat is, before anything gets opened up.

Installation

Cameras mount on adjustable arms inside the stand housing and run to a sealed enclosure on the machine. Systems are managed as a fleet, so software updates and health checks happen remotely rather than as a site visit.
